Currency stable despite fiscal fluctuations
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2008-10-20 10:02

The yuan ended little changed on a weekly basis last week as China pledged to keep its currency stable.

The yuan finished at 6.8340 against the US dollar on Friday, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System. It was little changed from a week ago's ending of 6.8357.

The Chinese authorities said one of the best ways to ward off the ongoing financial turmoil is to maintain a stable economy and improve China's own economy.

A stable economy, a stable currency and a stable capital market are the three goals sought by authorities to steer China through the financial crisis.

Consumer confidence has been battered amid the financial meltdown with households pessimistic about global recession. US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke warned last week that it will take "some time" to unfreeze the credit markets.

He also noted that even after credit markets return to normal, the US economy is not likely to return to its potential growth right away.
